Tone-mapped video: review highlights, gamut and SDR white

Tone mapping adapts luminance presentation to a receiving range; gamut mapping addresses colors that may fall outside a receiving color space. Review both when an HDR source becomes an SDR derivative. A pleasing single frame does not prove that the conversion preserved every important highlight or color distinction.

Define the source and receiving presentation

Identify the intended input interpretation, output transfer, primaries and display purpose before applying a conversion. An unknown source tag is not a sound basis for a universal HDR-to-SDR preset. Preserve the original and check production notes or a known reference where available. Ordinary white surfaces and HDR highlights can have different roles in that presentation.

For an SDR element inside an HDR project, reference-white handling is an interpretation decision rather than proof that the element contains HDR highlight detail. Inspect how the project maps that source and how the final receiver presents it. Do not change all brightness values simply because an SDR graphic appears different from an HDR camera scene.

Test the conversion on contrasting scene types

Choose a short sample containing bright detail, dark content, skin tones and saturated objects. Use the installed converter's documented input assumptions and output settings and export to a new file. FFmpeg documents tone-mapping filters, but different methods and complete filter chains have different requirements. Copying one filter name is not a complete color-management recipe.

Compare details that matter to the task: a visible whiteboard marking, a bright lamp boundary or a color-coded control. A conversion may compress highlight distinctions or change saturated colors even when ordinary faces look acceptable. Gamut changes and brightness changes are related to the delivery but should not be described as the same parameter or fixed by increasing bitrate alone.

Verify the saved receiving copy and describe its limits

Inspect the derivative's declared interpretation and review its actual playback path at appropriate settings. Compare several shots, including transitions where the source lighting changes. An editor preview, thumbnail or screenshot may have its own display transform and cannot substitute for the saved artifact's receiver check.

Label an accepted SDR copy as a derivative rather than an unchanged HDR master. Retain the original for another receiving requirement or revised conversion. SocialVidDownloader does not provide a professional tone-mapping or gamut-calibration guarantee, and a converter output must not be assumed to recover clipped source highlights. State which receiving presentation was checked and what remains uncertain instead of declaring that a resolution label or a more saturated appearance proves complete preservation.

Worked example

Example: an HDR demonstration becomes an SDR review movie. Faces look natural, but bright labels on a control panel merge into a uniform white patch. Include that panel in the conversion review and compare a revised path; approving only the face shot would miss an actual loss of instructional information.
