A downloaded video is zero bytes: what to check

A zero-byte file contains no usable video data. Do not treat its filename as proof of a successful download. Check the browser's transfer status, available storage, and whether the downloader produced a ready file, then retry with a fresh authorized source session if appropriate.

Confirm the measured size and matching transfer

Inspect the file's properties in your file manager. Make sure you selected the intended copy, not an empty placeholder created by another application. Compare its name and creation time with the browser's download entry. A folder or shortcut is not the downloaded media itself.

Wait if the transfer is still active. Some applications create a destination before they receive content. If the entry is interrupted or failed, preserve that message. When the browser reports completion but the local file is empty, the result still fails the basic usability check. Playback tools cannot decode bytes that were never saved.

Check destination storage and the ready-file step

Verify free space and write access in the actual destination. An external drive can disconnect, a synchronized location can be unavailable, or an organization policy can restrict writes. Try an allowed local destination with adequate space rather than repeatedly using a location that cannot retain the file.

Return to the tool and confirm that processing completed. An analysis preview is not a downloadable result, and an old temporary file address may have expired. Use a fresh analysis of the original public media link and select an available format. Do not copy a preview URL or save the page itself as though it were the media file.

Verify a retry and preserve useful evidence

Start one new transfer and watch its download entry until it finishes. Inspect the saved size before opening the copy. If the browser still produces an empty result, stop making identical attempts and record the error, destination type, and whether the ready-file action was reached.

An empty file is different from a valid small video, an unsupported codec, or a cloud item whose contents are not yet local. Treat each according to its evidence. Delete empty leftovers only after identifying the correct completed copy. Never rename the zero-byte file, invent a size, or assume a success message alone makes the result usable. The final local file must contain real data and pass a playback check.

Worked example

Illustrative case: a browser entry says interrupted and the destination contains an empty file. The user frees space in an allowed local folder, performs fresh analysis, and verifies a nonzero completed copy. Renaming the original empty file would not have recovered any content.
