FFmpeg chroma key: review the matte and color spill separately
A chroma key creates transparency from selected picture colors; it does not understand which objects are a background. Color spill is a separate appearance problem caused by screen color contaminating wanted edges. Preserve the original, inspect a short moving interval, and accept the matte and visible foreground separately before applying the settings to the full recording.

Choose the screen reference and retain wanted colors
Inspect a source interval with hair, motion blur, shadows and an object near the screen. Identify the actual screen color instead of using a green preset for every recording. Clothing, graphics and reflections that share the chosen color can also become transparent. Changing the tolerance cannot reliably distinguish two objects with the same picture values.
Record source dimensions, frame timing and color interpretation. A compressed or unevenly lit screen can have several shades and block-shaped edges. Start with an untouched authorized source and a separate output name. An attractive still is insufficient evidence that the matte stays consistent as the subject moves.
Make a bounded native matte test
Inspect ffmpeg -h filter=chromakey for the installed filter. It operates on YUV video; its color option normally accepts an RGB color specification unless yuv is enabled. Similarity determines the matching region, while blend changes the transition around that selection. These controls are not a semantic background detector or a guarantee of clean hair detail.
For a known green-screen eight-bit review source, an illustrative test is ffmpeg -n -t 5 -i source.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -vf "chromakey=color=0x00ff00: similarity=0.1: blend=0.05" -an -c:v ffv1 -pix_fmt bgra review-key.mkv. The values are examples, not a measured correction for an arbitrary clip. Input-side -t bounds the test, -n protects an existing output, and the explicit mapping produces a video-only derivative.
Verify transparency and spill against the receiving background
Use a compatible receiver that actually interprets the saved alpha channel. Compare the keyed output over both a light and dark background, checking moving edges, holes in wanted objects and remaining screen patches. A player displaying a black background does not prove that transparency was saved or lost. Inspect the actual pixel format and the composited result rather than only a thumbnail.
If unwanted green or blue remains on retained edges, examine a separate despill test. Native ffmpeg -h filter=despill exposes screen type and color adjustment controls; its alpha-changing option defaults to false. Spill correction changes wanted color appearance and must be compared against the original. Do not simply increase key similarity until spill disappears, because that can remove the foreground itself.
Deliver only an accepted derivative
Retain the parent and settings, and verify the entire intended interval before a long render. Map required audio explicitly in a separate delivery; the bounded example intentionally excludes it. Check caption and graphic visibility over the real receiving background. Loss of fine edge detail or clipped regions cannot be recovered by labeling the result high resolution.
SocialVidDownloader does not expose an arbitrary chroma-key or despill workflow. Its image watermark and other verified utilities have their own settings and must not be described as background removal. If the source cannot support an acceptable matte, leave that derivative unapproved and use a different permitted production approach rather than claiming a clean result from a successful process exit.
Worked example
Example: green fabric on a presenter is selected along with the screen. Widening similarity removes more fabric while leaving a color cast on hair. The reviewer treats those as two separate failures, retains the source, and rejects the unsuitable matte instead of calling the video a finished background replacement.
