Final Cut camera archives: retain complete capture resources

A camera archive preserves a supported file-based camera source for later browsing and import. A Final Cut library instead holds editing organization and its configured media references. Retain the capture package and verify the import separately; a library thumbnail or one copied segment does not prove that a complete spanned recording is available.

Identify the capture package and required portions

Keep the authorized camera media and its original structure while preparing retention. Identify the device, cards and expected recording. A logical shot can span more than one card, so a single visible file or card is not automatically the complete source. Record the required portions before importing only the most convenient item.

Apple distinguishes file-based camera archiving from a live camera signal. Do not call a live preview an already retained camera archive. Likewise, an automatic library database backup is a different artifact and does not include source-media bytes. A finished rendered movie can serve a viewing purpose without preserving the capture package or editable library.

Create a native archive at a deliberate destination

Connect the supported camera or card and open File > Import > Media. Select the device in the Media Import window and use Create Archive. Give it an identifiable name and choose the intended destination. Preserve sufficient storage and keep the camera source until the created archive has been verified.

For a spanned shot, Apple’s documented approach creates an archive for each card containing a portion, then makes all those archives available for import. Keep the card associations and archive names clear. Do not flatten the package by renaming unrelated segments or discarding companions merely because one video file happens to play.

Import and check the logical recording

Open Media Import and navigate to the retained archives on the storage device. Expand the archive to inspect its clips. For a spanned recording, make all required portions available and inspect Final Cut’s completeness indication. Missing archives can leave separately imported portions rather than the complete logical clip; record the missing beginning, middle or ending honestly.

Choose the intended event and relevant import options, then wait for the actual import to finish. A closed window is not proof that background work has completed. Play recognizable content across a span boundary and check required sound and the ending. Use the incomplete-camera-import guide when the project still depends on an unfinished camera reference instead of erasing the source to make the warning disappear.

Verify independent retention and keep the editing package separate

Check the archive from its retained location and confirm that the intended resources are available without substituting another shoot with reused filenames. Preserve the archive while separately preparing any required editable library handoff. A library copy’s original, optimized and proxy choices answer a different packaging question from which camera cards were captured.

Retain independent backups according to the actual production requirement. Do not erase or reuse the only source card based solely on a visible archive name. Record the tested import scope and any missing portion. SocialVidDownloader does not build camera archives, reconstruct missing spanned media or recover Final Cut projects. Its supported permitted downloads are separate media inputs and must not be represented as replacements for an unverified camera capture package.

Worked example

Example: one interview spans two camera cards. The first card’s portion plays, but the second archive is absent. The operator retains both cards, creates and checks the required archives and verifies the span transition after import; one playable fragment is never described as the complete captured interview.
