Google Photos Locked Folder: check video retention before a device change

Before reinstalling Google Photos, clearing its app data, or replacing an Android device, check whether the videos in Locked Folder are backed up. A protected folder is not automatically a recoverable copy. Verify the particular items and your authorized account access before making a change that could remove the only retained recording.

Locate the video in the protected collection

Google Photos describes Locked Folder as a protected collection whose items are absent from the normal photo grid, search, albums and memories. On Android, its current help places it under Collections, then Locked. Use the device’s authorized unlock process to inspect it.

A video missing from ordinary search is therefore not enough evidence of deletion. Check the protected collection before repeating a download or clearing application data as a troubleshooting experiment. This is a storage-management feature, not a change to the recording’s container, codecs or source permissions.

Check the separate backup decision

Google documents automatic Locked Folder backup and the option to back up selected items manually. Items without a backup remain on that device. Its help warns that uninstalling Photos, clearing app data, or device loss can remove unbacked items; it also describes local items being omitted from standard USB or cloud device transfers when backup is off.

Review the backup state for the actual item you need to retain. A general account backup setting or an ordinary photo visible on another device does not establish that this protected video is available there. If a change is imminent, verify the relevant recording before relying on the device-migration process.

Choose retention according to your own privacy requirements and authority to hold the recording. This guide does not require you to upload sensitive media merely to complete a checklist. If a cloud copy is inappropriate, establish another authorized retention method and verify it before deleting or resetting the source device.

Understand what moving the item does not cover

The documented move to Locked Folder does not move related copies, edited versions or media saved by other people. Google also warns that existing Google Photos backups of the moved item are deleted when Locked Folder backup is not enabled. Review these consequences before changing the location.

Think about your own derivative files separately. A trimmed training clip, an exported edit and the retained source can occupy different locations even if their pictures look similar. Checking only one protected entry cannot establish the privacy or recoverability of the other copies.

Do not promise that moving your version withdraws a recipient’s saved version. If you already shared the recording, consider that existing handoff separately. The practical question here is which of your retained items will survive the planned device change, not whether one folder action controls every copy everywhere.

Verify access before clearing or replacing anything

Record the identity of the needed video without putting private content or unlock secrets in a shared checklist. Note its approximate duration and another distinguishing detail. Then use the authorized access method to check that the retained copy corresponds to that recording.

Where you chose and completed a supported backup, verify access from the intended account and recovery environment. A folder opening successfully is only the first check: play the required recording and confirm recognizable picture and sound. Avoid a destructive test on the sole copy.

If you prefer an independently retained local copy, review how it will be protected, located and opened after the change. A convenient filename is not proof of a complete transfer. The general restore-test and encrypted-backup guides cover those separate checks without treating this feature as a universal backup system.

Troubleshoot absence without making the situation worse

If the video is not where expected, separate a hidden collection from a missing backup and an unavailable device. Check the account context and whether the recording was actually retained before the change. Do not clear app data or uninstall Photos merely to refresh the interface while an unbacked item may still exist locally.

If the original device or local data is already gone and no retained copy can be verified, do not invent a successful recovery. Consult Google’s current help for the actual situation. This site cannot recover a missing Locked Folder item, unlock another person’s device, or bypass access protection.

For future retention, add a specific protected-item check to the device-change plan. That small check addresses a feature-specific omission that an ordinary transfer checklist can miss. Keep the result truthful: verified playable copy, incomplete verification, or no recoverable copy established.

Worked example

A creator keeps a sensitive but authorized interview in Locked Folder and plans to replace an Android phone. Seeing ordinary photos on the new phone does not verify the interview. They check that particular protected video’s chosen retention method and playback before clearing the old phone’s app data.
